If your feed has been flooded with the viral honey butter toast, then you’ve come the right place.
What is Honey Butter Toast? Honey butter toast is a thick slab of bread covered in a delicious mixture of honey and butter, toasted to a crisp. It’s sweet, caramelised and crispy on the outside while soft and fluffy in the interior. The honey butter toast is popularised by Arome Bakery in London and has taken the internet by storm so we’re here to replicate it and make it better with ice cream and salt caramel sauce.
There are 3 main components to this dish: Bread, honey butter and salted caramel.
- Bread: you will need Japanese milk bread that you can find at Asian grocery stores or any Japanese bakery. Finding an uncut loaf might be hard since they mostly come pre-sliced. If this is something you cannot find near you then a great alternative would be uncut brioche bread loaf but it won’t be as soft as Japanese milk bread.
- Honey butter: it’s made up of butter, honey, brown sugar and salt. Yes not for days of dieting but trust me, it’s worth the calories. Salt is needed to offset the richness and sweetness of the honey butter paste and will help out the flavour of the honey a lot more. I used a mixture of honey and brown sugar for interest in flavour. Honey has a floral flavour palette whereas brown sugar has a more caramel taste.
- Salted caramel sauce: it’s made up of caster sugar, butter, heavy cream and salt – a delicious salted caramel sauce that is versatile with any dessert. It’s quick and easy to make too. You start off with melting the sugar into a caramel – i like my caramel on the bitter side and quite dark so i let it go to a dark amber, if you prefer a lighter caramel then take it off the heat sooner, it’s up to your preference. Once you’ve achieved your desired caramel, pour in your heavy and stir quickly (be careful as the caramel is hot and it can splash), To prevent your caramel sauce from splitting, i suggest you warm up your heavy cream slightly. Once it’s incorporated, add in your butter and stir until combined, seasoned with salt.
Ingredients
Japanese milk bread
Vanilla ice cream
Honey butter:
80g butter, softened
80g brown sugar
50g honey
Salted Caramel Sauce:
1/3 cup caster sugar
2 tbsp butter, diced
1/4 cup heavy cream, slightly warmed in the microwave
1/3 tsp salt
Method
- Preheat oven to 180C/350F.
- Honey Butter: in a bowl, combine all the ingredients for the honey butter with a pinch of salt. Mix well until incorporated and then set aside.
- Get your loaf of bread and cut a thick slice (around 3cm or 2 inches). Remove all the crust. Slice the honey butter onto the bread evenly on all sides and bake for 20 minutes, flip halfway.
- While your bread is baking, prepare the caramel sauce. In a pan over medium heat, melt your sugar until it’s an amber colour. Carefully drop in the butter and stir to combine. Then pour in the cream and again carefully stir to well combine. Add in the salt and stir. Transfer the sauce into a bowl or jug.
- Once your bread is ready, leave to cook on a wire rack. Then to serve, top with ice cream and a healthy drizzle of salted caramel sauce.
